The Gimme 5 Challenge
Peter Webb
On a work trip, a while ago after completing the Budapest ½ Marathon, one of my distributors said, "You could do a ½ marathon in each one of your countries".
At first I did not even given this a second thought, but one day I was thinking about what would motivate me to train throughout the year and then I remembered his words.
Why not? So there I was.
The first challenge had been finding the races. Many half marathons take place at the same time in different countries - I guess because generally people are not that stupid to try to do this.
5 separate races, 5 different countries, & 5 new challenges
The second challenge was that my wife was due to give birth in April, so as a new father I would have a new challenge at that time.
At last I found them and here they are...
4th January
Tromso, North Norway
Polar Night Half Marathon
This was a night race in the ice and snow. It was expected to be very cold, around 10deg C, but it gave me the chance to have my way lit by the amazing natural phenomena 'The Northern Lights', pictured left.
And then opposite you can see me warming up by fire after the the event.
14th March
Boulder City, USA
Hoover Dam 6 Tunnels Half Marathon
From the cold to the heat.
I was running in green, celebrating St Patrick's Day, just outside of Las Vegas.
With the chance to be running to the Hoover Dam for what I imagined would be a spectacular view.
One night in Vegas to 'Relax' and then straight on to San Francisco for work
28th March
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague Half Marathon
After a busy week working in San Francisco, it was back over the Atlantic for the next race.
I was joined by my business partner from the Czech Republic who suggested the challenge.
13th June
Windsor, England
Windsor Triathlon
Not part of the challenge but a team from work were competing in this very popular Olympic Triathlon.
12th September
Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm Half Marathon
Back on the road again, taking on the streets of this beautiful Scandinavian City.
25th Ocotber
Aland, Baltic Sea
Aland Half Marathon
This was the perfect way to end the challenge and allowed me to say that this race would be taken as my Finland challenge.
This is a small island in the Baltic Sea with only 130,000 population and my only hope at this stage was that I had the energy to be able to get off the island and make it to the mainland.
